About Toronto

Canada's largest city enjoys a unique balance of business and pleasure, offering a high quality of life and reliable services. Approximately ten million Canadians - one third of Canada's population - live within a 160-km (100-mile) radius of Toronto and one half of the population of the United States is within one day's drive.

Toronto is home to over 80% of Canada's top high-tech firms, and is North America's third largest film and video production centre. The Toronto Stock Exchange is the third largest by value and second largest by volume in North America.

Toronto is not all business however. This cosmopolitan city offers a culturally diverse selection of world-class cuisine, sporting events, concerts, art and theatre - making Toronto Canada's #1 tourist destination.

Sports/Arts/Entertainment

  • Host to The Toronto International Film Festival, considered one of the top two film festivals in the world, and recently rated number one by a Los Angeles Times industry poll
  • Among the top three international centres for english language theatre - behind only New York and London
  • Home of the Molson Indy and four professional sports teams; the NHL's Maple Leaf's, the NBA's Raptors, Major League Baseball's Bluejays and Canadian football's Argonauts.

Education/Health Care

  • Three universities and six colleges in the city accommodate close to 500,000 students.
  • Has one of North America's largest medical communities, with more than 50 hospitals, 8,000 physicians, and over 50,000 health care professionals.

Industry/Infrastructure

  • The 4th highest concentration of commercial software companies in the world, and one of North America's hottest animation centres;
  • Home to seven of the top 10 information technology companies, including the Canadian headquarters and research centres of Apple, Hewlett-Packard and Sun Microsystems;
  • One of the best telecommunications networks in the world, with one of the highest percentage of fibre optic cable installed, and more wireless phones per capita, than anywhere in North America;
  • Toronto has outstanding air, road and rail transportation facilities, including North America's second largest public transit system;
  • The downtown core is serviced by North America's largest continuous underground pedestrian system, connecting 1100 stores and restaurants, 48 office towers, 6 major hotels and several entertainment complexes.
