Area Information
Windsor is a strategically important location in Southwestern Ontario. Located on the banks of Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair, and the Detroit River, Winsor is an important geographical place. More than half of the North American population lives within an 8-hour drive of the area. In fact, Metropolitan Detroit, the 10th largest market in the US is less than one mile away across the Detroit River. Windsor is also in the heart of Ontario's Auto Manufacturing Sector, and is an important transmodal centre of industry. Our southern Ontario location produces a temperate climate and fosters ideal safe, secure communities, providing a high standard of living. The region is also keenly focused on enhancing and retaining leading healthcare specialists and facilities. The area is full of local cultural events, with over 40 festivals, world renound entertainment, and Major League sports action. Windsor is an area of great importance in Southern Ontario.

Our Transportation Infrastructure
- Windsor-Essex County is serviced by well-maintained expressway connectors, provincial highways, and Highway 401. All routes interconnect with the US Interstate system via the Ambassador Bridge or Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.
- Winsor is served by two airports, the Windsor Airport which operates regular scheduled domestic air services, and nearby Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) located approximately 20 minutes across the border in Michigan provides international flights.
- Railways serving the arrea include VIA Rail passenger service, CN, CP and Essex Terminal for industry service. An underwater rail tunnel links to the US rail network.
- The Port of Windsor can accomodate any vessel sailing the Great Lakes. Almost 5.8 million tonnes of cargo pass through the port annually.
Our Health Care Facilities
- Two main hospitals service Windsor, Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital and Windsor Regional Hospital, which include specialists in almost all fields of medicine.
- An additional healthcare facility which services Windsor is located in Essex County, known as Leamington District Memorial Hospital.
- These three Windsor-Essex hospitals work together in tangent with the City of Detroit and Chatham-Kent Region hospitals to annually share resources and to enable a high quality of care for both Canadian and American residents.
- Construction is now underway for the new $24 Million Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry - Windsor Program, and undergraduate medical campus at the University of Windsor. Scheduled to open fall 2008.
Our Educational Institutions
- Windsor is home to the University of Windsor which has a population of over 16,000 full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate students in 9 faculty programs. This institution boasts internationally focused multi-disciplinary studies and maintains a broad diversity of students and faculty.
- University of Windsor is currently expanding a new Medical School and Centre for Engineering Innovation.
- St. Clair College of Applied Arts and Technology is well regarded for a wide variety of superior skills training programs

- Over 500 manufacturers supply tool & die, mold making, machining, automation transfer equipment, machine building, deep draw metal stamping, micro-electronics and laser guided robotics systems to meet the demands of leading manufacturers world-wide.

- Tourism is also a thriving industry in the area, with tourists flocking to visit Ceasar's Windosr, Point Pelee National Park, Our Wine region route, water-based recreation, music, theatre, visual arts and local historical sites like Fort Malden and the Underground Railway.
