About Saskatchewan
Saskatchewan is globally recognized for its rich and diverse natural resources such as crude petroleum, potash, canola, uranium, oats, wheat, and lumber. In the last 10 years, Saskatchewan has seen an estimated $161B of capital investments. The province ranks first in Canada for mining investment attractiveness, according to the Fraser Institute’s annual survey. As the world’s largest producer of potash and Canada’s second largest energy producer, the province has a combined value of $22.4 billion annually in mining, oil, and gas. Saskatchewan hosts 40% of Canada’s cultivated farmland, while also providing 34 million hectares of forest. Saskatchewan’s strong agri-food sector continues to be a bright spot, with the value of grains, oilseed, and other food exports surging 42% in the first 10 months of 2020 and into 2021. Saskatchewan exports totaled more than $30 billion in 2020, up 2.5% over 2019. This represents the highest percentage increase amongst all the provinces, and a record export year for Saskatchewan.
The population in Saskatchewan is roughly 1,200,000 as of 2022, ranking sixth among Canadian provinces. The total enrollment in post-secondary education continues to increase yearly at a rate of 3%. In the 2019-2020 academic year there were 53,850 students enrolled in credentialed post-secondary programs through Saskatchewan’s public institutions. This number appears to be keeping pace with the growing demand for skilled labour, with 584,700 persons employed in 2020. Youth aged 15-24 account for 13% of those employed in the province, exhibiting a strong case for workforce growth. Saskatchewan’s technology sector is rapidly growing with successful startups, including Coconut Software, 7Shifts Restaurant Scheduling, Gas Buddy, and Vendasta.
