In these uncertain times, everyone is searching for answers – what’s coming next, and how can we be prepared?

Few understand this better than CBRE’s Shawn Hamilton. As Managing Director of CBRE’s Ottawa Office and with decades of experience in commercial real estate, Shawn recognizes the value of thought leadership within the industry.

Shawn is leveraging the power of the CBRE platform to help companies and clients prepare for what comes next.

On Reopening

“Here in Ottawa, the city is about to enter the second phase of reopening.

But just because things are opening doesn’t mean people’s psychology is going to change overnight. It will be interesting to see who is interested in going out, and where they choose to go.”

On Heading Back to Work

“Brokers tend to be optimistic by nature, I find – they want to charge back into the office and go right back to work.

Clients are a bit more cautious. They’re asking, how do we dip our toe in safely, and with a minimal amount of discomfort.

They’re looking to CBRE for knowledge and best practices – they want a roadmap for how to approach reopening.”

On Conversations, Apart

“With my team, a lot of our communication at the office would happen casually on coffee walks, office run-ins, and being in proximity to one another.

Now things have to be a bit more purposeful. And it can be frustrating – you’re not getting the energy you would get from an in-person conversation.

At the same time, COVID has created an opportunity for new connections.

People are more available than they’ve ever been, and they’re hungry for information. When it comes to making initial contact with a new person, it’s easier now than it’s ever been.

On Adjusting Goals

“For the first 8-10 weeks of remote work I was running around like this was a global problem that I could somehow solve.

I was working 16-hour days, talking to the business community and with other brokers.

Everyone was so hungry for information, and it became all-consuming.

I had to take a step back. If you keep working like that, you’ll implode. Now, I’m more purposeful with my work. I can only control what I can control. This is a time to retool, to be nimble and agile. If you don’t you will always be swimming upstream.”

On Managing Stress

“If you have decades of a proven track record and all of a sudden you need to abandon your approach, that’s very frightening.

The first thing you have to do is give yourself permission to be scared. If you don’t allow yourself that, you’re always going to be fighting it.

Don’t let it paralyze you but recognize it. You’re going to have to go outside of your comfort zone in order to rethink how you’re working, and that’s alright.”

On Leveraging the CBRE Platform

“This is the time when you realize the power of the CBRE platform.

People are looking to us for answers, and we can provide that thought leadership.

Whether it’s research, articles or webinars, we have a knowledge and authority that is extremely valuable.”
