About Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
Saskatoon, located in the province of Saskatchewan, thrives on its abundant natural resources. Positioned along the South Saskatchewan River, this vibrant city is a hub for agriculture, mining, and energy sectors.
Saskatoon boasts vast farmland, contributing to more than 40% of Canada’s total. It’s a global leader in crop exports, including wheat, lentils, and canola. Recent developments include major agribusiness investments and plans for canola crushing plants - canola oil and canola seed were among Saskatchewan's top three agri-food exports in 2022, with a value of $3.5 billion and $2.7 billion, respectively.
Saskatchewan holds half of the world’s potash reserves and nearly a quarter of uranium production. BHP’s investment of $14 billion in the Jansen potash mine and Gensource Potash’s Tugaske project highlight the sector’s growth. Additionally, rare earth processing facilities are emerging, potentially making Saskatoon a hub for critical minerals used in batteries and electronics.
As Canada’s second-largest oil producer and third-largest natural gas producer, Saskatchewan plays a crucial role. Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) acquired Husky retail fuel sites and embarked on a $2.4 billion renewable diesel project. FCL also plans carbon capture facilities at its ethanol complex.
Nutrien, headquartered in Saskatoon, is a global agricultural industry leader. They provide crop nutrients (such as potash, nitrogen, and phosphate) and distribute fertilizers to enhance crop yields and promote sustainable agriculture.
Cameco, also based in Saskatoon, is a prominent uranium producer. Their mining, processing, and global sales of uranium play a vital role in fueling nuclear reactors, which generate low-emission electricity.
Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL), headquartered in Saskatoon, operates across Western Canada. FCL offers diverse services to member co-ops, including agriculture, energy, food, retail, and fuel distribution.
Saskatoon’s strength lies in its natural resources, hardworking pool of talent and it is well-poised for growth in key industries and emerging economies.
